USA To Japan

Carving A Path Between Two Cultures

Nisei, it's a name given to a person born in the US from Japanese immigrant parent(s). This is the world in which Sierra Schlag has lived her entire life. "In Japan I'm seen as white, while in America I am consistently seen as Asian," she says.

Sierra has struggled with her biracial identity her entire life, but it wasn't until 2019 that she became introspective about it. "I'm white passing but raised much differently than my white peers. When I'm in Japan I feel like I make sense, but I can't even hold a conversation with my grandma. I feel out of place but also like I am supposed to be in these spaces all at the same time." This film explores this feeling of never quite fitting into either place that she is culturally connected to, and how she finally finds her connection to both worlds on the ski slopes.

Written and produced by Sierra Schlag.

Forsake is proud to partner with Sierra on this film.
